About Us

Above the Clouds

Our Story

Dr. Smallwood conceived of and created our company, originally Smallwood Behavioral, in 2017 in Scottsdale, Arizona with the idea that behavioral healthcare should fit the modern world as a hybrid modality. We pioneered the way toward self-service and telemedicine care delivery, offering seamless transitions between both virtual and in-person treatment, allowing our clients control of their healthcare. This idea grew quickly, while we always maintained our value that care delivery should be personal and that clients should be highly engaged in their own decisions. We moved our primary practice headquarters to Colorado in 2022 and changed our name while continuing to maintain physical offices in our service locations. Forefront Psychotherapeutics will continue to promote and expand upon our foundational values, mission, and vision for behavioral healthcare toward a brighter future.

Our constructivist approach values human knowledge, and the experience of the world around us, as something that is constructed by an individual and not something that is passively acquired. Constructivism holds that humans continuously learn by synthesizing what is experienced with what is already known, building their own representations. Therefore, each person's ideas and experiences of themselves, the world around them, and their interactions between themselves and the world are not all exactly the same.
